Learning how to CS
So you're a newer player to Heroes of Newerth. You've seen the game, you know basically how to play, but you need to learn how to advance. The most basic of advice I can give is get creep kills, or Creep Score. CSing will give you gold, deny the enemy player gold and experience, and make you feel better about yourself. In order to CS well, you have to understand how damage works.
Let's say you're playing Devourer. With a minimum damage of 52 at level one, and 10% creep armor reduction, you're hitting for 47 damage. At less than 10% of a melee creeps health, it can be difficult to last hit creeps with no harassment going on. With a good player opposing you, denying, dealing damage, creep pulling, and wave pulling it can be hell. Which is why with most farming melee heroes, you improve your base damage at level one.
With a hatchet, our minimum damage soars(32%) to 69. If you bring four minor totems as well, it goes to 74 (44%), 67 after damage reduction. At this point you're doing well over 10% of a creeps health now, making last hitting quite a bit easier. If you're still having issues after this massive damage boost you're in a harass-happy lane, or are mistiming your last hits, each of which have solutions.
If your lane is harassing you to no end you can wave pull or creep pull. Wave pulling is right clicking on an enemy hero within six hundred range units (and then backing up), and all of the enemy creeps will charge after you for a short time, putting your creeps between the harasser and you. At this point it becomes almost trivial to come in, take a last hit, and back out again. Creep Pulling is when you attack the neutral creeps in your jungle, (generally at X:15 or X:45 seconds) and "pull" them out to your lane.

The green one and two denoting Hellborne creep pulls and the red one being the primary creep camp and two and three have to be pulled to one with your creeps already there.
If you're having an issue mistiming your last hits I suggest you play your hero more, (if you have frame lag or ping lag that is another matter altogether) and download a last hit modification.

Learning From Pros
Have you ever watched a professional game? I mean one of those games where two teams of professional players get together and try their hardest to come out on top. Some people enjoy watching the game, some people think that Heroes of Newerth (and almost every "moba") isn't a good spectator sport.
Check out a streamed HoN game, or; log on, view the player ladder, sort by PSR, and look through the recent games they've played. See a hero you like in their gamelist? Consider watching their replay. Watch their hero or just watch the game, either way you're likely to learn a lot. Even if you don't understand all of it, try putting some of it into practice. You'll be amazed at what good things come of knowing some advanced strategies.
There's no reason not to go back after your own game and check your replay too. Want to see how another player in your game did something so well or so poorly? Just download the replay from the stats screen and view at your leisure.

Epic Bloggery
Well, it was suggested that I started a HoN blog, and as such here it is. As a pretty good hon player and a pretty good teacher we'll see what we can do with this. I'll start posting a few walkthroughs and guides as I have time. If anyone actually starts to read this I have an idea where I'll go over someones replay, or observe them while they play and post it to here. Again, I guess we'll just see how it goes. Feel free to comment with any specific heroes you'd like guides for.
